The Bay of the Somme is a very beautiful area on the English Channel, with a large estuary of 70 km2 where the Somme River flows into the sea. This particular place fulfil all the conditions to welcome many species of birds, especialy migratory birds. But they are not the only ones, this region is also appreciated by the seals who come here for its sandbanks and its climatic conditions suitable for their developement. Come and discover these phocids. It is at low tide on the immense sandbanks of the Pointe du Hourdel, that they station themselves. It is an essentiel place to observe the largest colony of seals. However, some recomendations are necessary. You should not approache it to less than 300 m, at the risk of putting yourself and the animal itself in danger. It should also be remember that the seal has been a protected species since 1994, and any disturbance is punisable by a fine.
How not to be seduced by its prety face, its beautiful moustache, its lively eye and its clumsy way of moving, the seal remains endaring. They can be easily observed when they are on their ' resting places ' , sandbanks on the edge of the channel of the Somme at low tide. They use these resting places to regenerate.
