Vocabulary: some time/ sometime/ sometimes - English lesson

When we're writing, we often hesitate when we have to spell some expressions which

are considered to be difficult: sometime, some time, sometimes...

    1) SOMETIME is an adverb. (It is a single word and has no final -s.) It means:

'one of these days', 'one day or another', 'some day'', 'within the month'...

         Sometime/ someday other than now...

It can be replaced by: 'someday', or 'at some point'.

    - Paula said she'd visit us sometime around Xmas.

    2) SOME TIME: written in two words: a period of time, quite a while...

When SOME TIME is written in two words, it expresses a period of time and often refers to a long moment.

It can also refer to an imprecise period of time, and also to a long period.

    - For some time, people have known that the Earth is round.

    - It will still take me some time to finish this report... one or two more days, at least.

    3) SOMETIMES: ( a single word ) is an adverb meaning 'OCCASIONALLY' or 'NOW AND THEN'.

There are here several 'difficulties' for non-native people."...

French people have the same difficulty in their language (the difference between 'quelquefois' and

'quelques fois' is a real problem  for French people...) The grammatical 'classes' of words are

studied in primary school by most students and then forgotten: Then, the difficulty only exists when

writingand formal writing is used less and less.

SOMETIMES is an adverb expressing frequency like always, never, usually, and rarely.

    - Sometimes, it's hard to understand what the toddler is saying...

    - English grammar sometimes follows its own rules, and sometimes it doesn't!

Very strict rules... If you know them, it shouldn't be difficult to make differences between these three

words. The test should really help you... Go for the test!
