Which one to choose: 'than', 'as' or '(that)?

Speaking a foreign language, is having reflexes based on an in-depth knowledge

of this language. There are automatisms to know and to reproduce.

Not to make mistakes, the simplest thing to do is to learn some expressions by

heart!

1) After an adjective or an adverb in the comparative form, use THAN.

* After short and long adjectives (adverbs):

- easier than...// faster than...

* After long adjectives and adverbs ending with Y:

- more expensive than.../ more slowly than...

* Notice: OTHER THAN... and RATHER THAN...

- Rather than give him money, I'd much rather feed him.

2) In comparatives of equality (in the affirmative and negative forms) use AS.

- He's not as intelligent as his brother.

- the same... as... / as many... as.../ as much... as...

3) In almost all the other cases, useTHAT.

( THAT is often unnecessary)

- I don't think (that) she will come.

Thus, it is often quite easy to know which pronoun must be used. il faut utiliser.

The nature of the construction (comparative or subordinate), where the different

elements can be found. Come on! Concentrate well! and... Go for the test !
