Chimney? Fireplace? or Mantlepiece? - English lesson

I'd never have imagined to write this lesson... Yet, this week I have found a mistake in an Advanced Student's essay... and I understood I had to meet this Student's need!

Indeed, if you have never read or heard the word "cheminée", you may be embarrassed because there are three words for it in English!

Three words and three different concepts, of course... the only problem is... to choose the right one! Let's try that...

UNE CHEMINÉE : A chimney? A fireplace? or a mantlepiece? HELP!

    1) A CHIMNEY (POT):  it is a wide pipe that allows smoke from a fire to go out through the roof.

    - In the distance, you could see black smoke going out of the chimneys of the houses.

    2) A FIREPLACE: The hearth,  or fireplace is where the fire is built in houses... It's a space in a room where you can have a fire, and the structure around this space.

In the country, there was a time when fire was under a big cauldron, or cooking pot...

This pot was used to cook soup or stew, filling the house with a wonderful fragrance and heating the house as well.

    - After a long walk in the cold, it's good to sit down by the fireplace to warm up...

    3) A MANTLEPIECE: a construction framing the opening of a fireplace and usually covering part of the chimney breast in a more or less decorative manner.

All sort of ornaments are displayed on this board : a clock, family photos, etc. In Anglo-Saxon countries, Christmas cards, or Easter cards, birthday cards, Saint Patrick's cards, or Halloween decorations are shown, depending on the Seasons.

    -  All the Christmas cards they had received were beautifully displayed on the mantlepiece.

    Additional vocabulary:

     A chimney sweep
     To sweep a chimney
     a factory chimney
     a log
To curl up by the fireside

You see, it's very easy, isn't it? Go for the test!
