Mrs. Mitchell's story

Mrs Sheila Mitchell an 86-year-old great-grandmother, returned to her home in Edinburgh over the weekend after diving 60 fathoms (360ft) in a mini-submarine to see the wreck of the 48,158-ton liner Britannic from which she escaped when it was torpedoed in the Aegean Sea 60 years ago.

The liner, sister-ship of the ill-fated Titanic, had been converted into a hospital ship and was on its way to pick up British Servicemen wounded at Gallipoli. Mrs Mitchell, then a nurse in her mid-twenties, was one of the 1,060 passengers, doctors, nurses and crew of the ship which sank with the loss of about 50 lives.

Mrs Mitchell spent three hours in a lifeboat before being picked up by a British destroyer, and resumed her wartime nursing service.

In July this year Jacques Cousteau, filming the bed of the Aegean, discovered the sunken liner and appealed to survivors to contact him. Mrs Mitchell was the only one who responded.At her home yesterday 'tired but feeling ten years younger' she said: 'I went down in the underwater craft and stayed for one-and-a-half hour. We went round the ship and I saw where the torpedo had struck'.

Cdr Cousteau said:'Mrs Mitchell forced our admiration, she dived 60 fathoms down, 60 years after the disaster and gained instantly the warm affection of all the team'.
