    Conjunctions


    COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

     A coordinating conjunction joins parts of a sentence ( words, clauses ) that are grammatically equal.

     There are 7 coordinating conjunctions. There is an easy way to remember them:

      their initials spell   FANBOYS

      F                   A                    N                      B                   O                      Y               S

     FOR              AND              NOR                 BUT               OR                   YET           SO

     examples:

     Suzan is  (nice)  and  (pretty)     two adjectives       (similar ideas)

     Would you like  (tea)  or  (coffee)  two nouns           ( alternative )

    ( It was raining ),  so   ( I took an umbrella)   two clauses    (result)

     ( My father is French ),   but  (my mother is English)   two clauses(contrasting ideas)


    He left, for he was late    (for: old fashioned, literary)  (because)

     It was not my fault, nor his   (negative alternative)

    It seemed incredible, yet it was true (emphasizes the differences)

    1. Jimmy is an audacious young boy. He had been told of the dangers of getting into the woods, he went ahead.

    2. He knew that the forest was dangerous the house haunted.

    3. He was curious, he disobeyed his parents. He entered the house.

    4. There he saw spiders, bats a ghost

    5. Jimmy got into a panic, he couldn't help it.

    6. He ran away, he was frightened by what he had seen.

    7. He didn't stop running, did he look back to the house.

    8. When he came back home he was sick, he went to bed.

    9. Jimmy had better stay out of haunted houses, he will have a heart attack.

    10. Jimmy is a nice unwary boy.
