    WISH

    WISHES AND REGRETS

    1)  WISH (present) = wishes

I wish = it can happen, but it is not likely to happen

Betty wishes she had an adding machine.

She thinks it will be hard to get an adding machine.

Use the past simple after the verb.

Mary wishes she were a princess.

were NOT was because we don't know if it will happen.

NB : If you think the event will occur, use "hope" instead of "wish".

I hope you have a happy birthday.

    2) WISH + past perfect  = regrets

These events should have been different.

He wishes he hadn't crashed his lorry.

Use the past perfect  ( had or had not + past participle )

    3) WISH + conditional = it should change!

I wish it would stop raining!
NO Unfortunately, the rain is still there.
