    When should "the" be omitted in English?

    Main rules:

     

    -> Before countries or family names:

    Ø England is an island.

    Ø Africa is a continent.

    But:

    The United States of America = the U. S. A.

     

    -> Before titles or jobs:

    Ø Doctor Sin - Ø Lady James - Ø Sir Arthur - Ø Professor Smith

     

    -> Before abstract nouns, a few uncountable nouns, general rules:

    (all) Ø cats have four legs. 

    But: The dog I saw was black. 

    (all) Ø grass is green. 

    But: The grass in my garden is too high. 

     



    Choose the correct answer.
    Ø = no article.
