30,000 years ago, Cro-Magon man carved notches into bones.

Approximately 4,000 years ago the Chinese invented the Abacus.

In the early 17th century, John Napier ( Neper in French) invented
another calculating tool 'Napier's rods (or bones) to simplify
the task of multiplication.

In 1642, Blaise Pascal invented one of the first mechanical calculators
able to add and subtract numbers: the Pascaline.

Later in that century, Leibnitz modified the Pascaline and created a new
calculator (the Step Reckoner) that could also multiply and divide.

Colossus (1944)

The first programmable computers appeared during World War II.
