    Here are some examples:

    a) Please stop talking.

    b) Walking is a good exercise.

    c)  Children like watching television.

    Words like talking, walking, watching, reading are called gerunds when they do the work of nouns which are called verbal nouns.

    Note the use of possessive pronouns my, our, his in the following examples:

    i) Do they mind my smoking ?

    ii) They were annoyed at our winning the game.

    iii) Excuse his coming late, he was not well this morning.

    State verbs never take 'ing'

    Here are some state verbs: like, love, own, belong.

    ex: It's wrong to say : The house is belonging to me.

          We say                : The house belongs to me.
