    Past simple


    Actions in the past. Often with dates. Used with facts.

     

     

    ➡️ I) Regular verbs:

    ◼️ Affirmative clauses: verb + -ed 
    Eg. : I walked 

    ◼️ Negative clauses: did not (auxiliary "do") + verb.
    Eg. : You did not (contracted form : didn't walk ).

    ◼️ Interrogative clauses: did + subject + verb.
    Eg. : Did they walk? 


    ◼️ 
    Interrogative+negative clauses : didn't + subject + verb.
    Eg. : Didn't they walk?



    ☀️ Spelling problems! 

    ◼️ For verbs ending in -e  , add -d.
    Eg. : agree ---> agreed

    ◼️ Verbs ending in a consonant with a -y => "y" becomes "i".
    Eg. : try---> tried

    ◼️ 1 syllable ending in  consonant + vowel + consonant => two consonants.
    Eg. : drop---> dropped

    ◼️ Verbs with more than 1 syllable with the last syllable stressed =>  two consonants.
    Eg. : prefer (stressed on "fer" ) ---> preferred


    ◼️ 
    Verbs with more than 1 syllable with the last syllable NOT stressed => one consonant.
    Eg. : enter (stressed on "en") ---> entered

    ◼️ Verbs ending in -c => add a  "k".
    Eg. : picnic---> picnicked




    ➡️ II) Irregular verbs:

    Only for affirmative clauses.

    You should learn them by heart.

    ◼️ The sun shone this morning.
    to shine - shone - shone : irregular

    ◼️ They didn't play tennis yesterday.
    Normal.

    Did you live in London last year? 
    Normal.





    👨🏻‍🏫 Complete the sentences, using "didn't" when possible.
