The Eiffel Tower was complete on the 28th January 1887 for the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris. Its construction was to be ephemeral as it was to be destroyed. However, due to its grat success during the Exhibition with its 2 million visitor, it become the symbol of the industrial power of France and was saved through its use as an antenna support for military operations, then as a radio and television transmitter.
The idea of its designer (contractor, architect and engineers ) was to create a very high tower, built as a pylon with four beam spread at the base and meeting at the top. A marvel of precision of this Iron Lady !
As soon as it opened, the tower had the most powerful lighthouse in the world. The last inovation was to adorn it with 336 bulbs that make it sparkle for 5 minutes every hour during the night, wile its lighthouse shines on Paris. This ilumination met with unanimous and worldwide success, and was the starting point, in Paris and in the major cities of the world, of the night-time enhancement of monuments.
The entire Tower is painted every 7 years by 25 painters who maintain it and 60 tons of paint are need to cover 2 500 000 m2 to the top.
Remember that this Iron Lady is named after its disigner Gustave EIFFEL.
