    I) A :

     

    >Before a consonant sound:

    A bird, a cat, a dog, a forest, a garden, a jacket, a key, a light, a month, a name, a paper, a quarter, a room, a swift, a tree, a village, a whale, a xylophone, a yoghurt, a zoologist.



    > When there is a loud "h":

    A hand, a head, a hit, a horse, a hulk, a hybrid

    > Before the sounds [w] and [j]: 

    A European, a one-man-show ([w]),

    a union, a yacht, a yoyo ([j]).


    II) AN :

    Before a vowel sound or a diphthong:

    An ear, an oil lamp, an eye

     

    An animal, an email, an identity, an orange, an umbrella.

     

     

    > Before a silent "h":

    An heir, an honest woman, an honour, an hour 



    > Before letters starting with the sound [è] :

    An LP 

    An MC 

    An MP 

    An SOS 

    An SSN 

     

     

     

    III) USES :

    > These articles must be used before jobs:

    She has been an English teacher for forty years, now she's retired.

     

     

    > For general clauses:

    A rat is bigger and more intelligent than a mouse.

     

     

    A cat has a more developed olfactory sense than the dog, but refuses to obey, so that cats cannot be recruited into the Police.

     

     

    A freesia is more fragrant than a poppy.

     

    In the Universe,a white star is hotter than a red star.

     

     

    > Frequency, speed, price : 

    He takes the bus twice a day. 

     

     

    He was driving at 120 miles an hour when the Police flashed him.
