Brief reminder of Part 1 (without mistake ) :
In the 18th century, Paris still had its medieval face. Strollers, risking jostling and accidents, were hardly interested in walking around. So the idea of building shops in covered galleries was launched.

These covered passages represent a tru architectural heritage of the 19th century. They each have their own specificitie and decoration inspire by neoclassicism, Renaissance or art deco styles. They were glased, heated and lit with gas, allowing people to leave the embarrassement of Paris with all its risques. They had became places of light, meetings, shopping, entertainment and all this sheltered from bad weather.

Today, Paris has only twenty or so that are open to the public. Even if they have lose their former luster, the covered passageways retain their charm and allow you to discover, under a soft, subdue light, a poetic, exentric and unusual Paris.
