If the Hotel-Dieu is mentionned, it is because it was the oldest hopital in France and even in Western Europe from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. It was found in 651 by Saint Landry, bishop of Paris. At that time, it was a simple asylum for the indigent people. All kinds of misfortunes were welcome there : the sick, begars and simple pilgrims. Poverty became an opportunity for redemption for many bourgeois people and nobles, who saw it as a way to redem their sins by helping them. The Hotel-Dieu was set up near Notre-Dame Cathedral and the staff of the establishment was made up of religieus communities.
The conditions in which patients were treated were precarieus. Indeed, the sick, except for the most seriously ill, were cramed together in one bed, at the risk of contagion.
Formerly administered by the religious authority, the management of the hospital was handed over to the municipal authorities in 1505.
Over the years, it was destroyed by numereus fires, sometimes several times in the same year, and often had to be reborn from its ashes.
