Brief reminder of Part 1 (without mistake ) :
The Hotel-Dieu hospital was built in the Middle Ages to receive the needy : beggars, the sick, even pilgrims. It quickly became the place where human misery was treated.

If the hospital was constanty evolving until the end of the 19th century, oscillating between destruction and reconstruction, it has retained its primary function of care and assistance throughout its history.
During the Second Empire, and as part of the transformation of Paris, the prefect Haussmann had an entier insalubrious district rased to the ground and ofered a 22000, plot of land, at the foot of Notre-Dame, to the architects Emile Jacques Gilbert and his son-in-law Arthur Stanislas Diet. The hospital was rebuild in its present configuration from 1867 to 1878, designing a hygienic structure composed of isolated pavillions, arranged in parallel for better air circulation, organised around a central courtyard. At the entrance, open galeries with arcades around a small French garden reminiscent of the design of cloiters
Since this reconstruction, the building has not undegone any external modification, only the interior has been regularly modified to meet the health requirements of modern medicine.

The Hotel-Dieu remains the first university hospital where the greatest masters in medecine and surgery treated and taught.
