Althoug the Elysee Palace represents three centuries of history, it is now the nerfe centre of power in France since the Fifth Republic.
Yet, at the beginning of the 18th century, the present-day faubourg Saint-Honore was nothing more than a plain with pastures and market gardens and a few thached roof houses.
Built and decorat between 1718 and 1722, the hotel was designed acording to the architectural principles in vogue at the time. In 1753, the Marquise de Pompadour, favourite of King Louis XV, acquired this private masion to make it a ' Parisian pied à terre ' . She bequathed it to Louis XV, who used it as a residence for ambassadors after extensive alterations. In 1773, Louis XV sold the hotel to Nicolas Beaujon, a businessman, who set up his bank there. The hotel will be redesigned in a rather important way. The Beaujon Hotel was renamed the Hotel de l ' Elysée. In 1848, a decre is voted by the National Assembly establishing the Elysee as the residence of the presidents of the Concil.
From the installation of Marshal Mac Mahon in 1874, the palace became the official residence of all the Presidents of the Republic except during the period from 1940 to 1946 when the palace remained close.
