Under the Ancien Régime, Parisians only had a small suply of drinking water and it was often of poor quality. In 1802, Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to remedy this situation and also to limit the epidemis (dysentery & cholera ) due to poor hygiene conditions. He therefore revived a project dating from the 16th century to create a nework of canals to supply Parisians with drinking water. This network was also to serve as a waterway for transporting goods and building materials to Paris centre. This project was entruted to the engineer Pierre-Simon Girard.
Work began in 1802 and was completed by the end of 1825. The footbridge were built between 1860 and 1890. Then forty years after its creation, the prefect Haussmann planed to create the Boulevard Voltaire but he came up againt the presence of the canal. In order not to slow down road traffic with a bridge, it was decided to louwer the canal by 6 metres.
The Saint Martin Canal is one of the three canals in the capital, along with those of Saint Denis and the Ourq. It is the only one to run entirly through the capital. This canal is four and a half kilometres long, 2 km of which are underground, and has a difference in level of 25 metres. It has 9 locks, 2 swing bridges, 2 fixed bridges and 5 pesdetrian bridges.
