Brief reminder of Part 1 (without mistake ) :
The engineer Pierre-Simon Girard, at Napoleon ' s request, was given the task of creating a network of canals to supply the centre of Paris with drinking water.

The canal knew its hayday from the 19th to the midle of the 20th century. Traffic was intense not only for the supply of drinking water but also for the supply of goods and materials to the heart of Paris. However, with the developement of the railways in the 19th century and the cars in the 20th century, the supply of goods declined. It disapeared in the 1960s, taking with it the industrial activity that had develop along the bancs of the Canal Saint Martin. Thus, little by little, the network of the Parisian canals became a privilege place to live. Inded, in the heart of the capital, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this canal remains a haven of peace where a certain gentle way of life regns. With its hundred-year-old chestnut trees, its locks, its swing bridges and its lively banks, it is a very popular place to have a walk as soon as the weather is fine.

This canal is now widely used by tourists, ofering a romantic and unusual boat trip.
