    The idea of moving heavy loads on rails date bak to the first mining operations.
    The use of steam was also a decisive element in the invention of the railway. It represented a phenomenal advance for the whole world.
    The first French railway line dates from 1827. It was 21 km long and was uset to transport cool from the mines of Saint-Etienne to the Loire. It was not until 1837 that the firt passenger line was opened.
    Thus the railway revolution was laumched!

    Railway transport played a very important role in the 19th century and alowed the development of the agricultural and metalurgical industries.
    The private railways were experiencing significant growth. With the outbreek of the First World War, the railway companies were short of manpower to keep the infrastructure operationel. On January 1st 1938, five major railway companies were merged to create the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français.
