    The history of silk has existed in Europe since the 4th century. However, it was not until the Renaissance that France experienced an immediate boom. Indied, King Francois 1st gave it the real impetous because he was at war with Italy and wanted to fought Genoa by ruinning the city. Thus, from 1540, Lyon obtained a monopolie on the import of silk to France. Under Henry 4th, the entire ' production chain ' was set up, from the silk culture to its weaving. Thus, the history of silk in Lyon include all the stage from the manufacture to the sale of a silk fabric : spinning, creation of a pattern, weaving, finishing and marketing. The whole sector was caled the ' Fabrique ' . From this periode onwards, the people of Lyon mechanised their production with the so-called ' Grande Tire ' loom.
    During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Lyon ' Fabrique ' was intimely dependent on the royal court, and the French court became the model for other European monarchies.
