    At the time of its construction, dating from the 10th century, the Conciergerie was the Palais de la Cité, the seat of power of the kings of France during the Capetian period. In the 12th century, the Île de la Cité became the centre of royal power, not far from Notre-Dame Cathedral and therefor also religious power.
    Saint Louis embellishe this palace by building the Sainte-Chapelle. Philip IV the Fair remodelled and elarged this residence to house the institutions of the kingdom. Thanks to him we owe its Gothic architecture as well as the remarkable turets : the Silver Tower where the Crown ' s treasur was kept and the Caesar Tower, built on Roman foundations.
    Between 1350 and 1353, King Jean II le Bon had a tower built on a former mashy site, with a belfry dominate by a lanterne, which later became the Clock Tower of the Palais de la Cité. Its shape is rectangular and massive. It is on this 47-metre high tower, with wals one metre thick, that the oldest public clock in Paris was placed. It is covered with fine gold leaves and adorned with a superb blue coat doted with fleur-de-lis. It is equipped with imposing bells that ring out every hour, day and night.
    At that time, this palace was considered the most beautiful one in Europe.
