    Dictation - Paris - Château of Vincennes 1/2

    From the 12th century onwards, the kings occupied a hunting residence in Vincennes, caled the ' Capetian Manor ' , in reference to the dynasti of kings who built it.
    The Château de Vincennes was construct on this same area between the 14th and 17th centuries. It is a real bastion. It is bordered on one side by the city, less than 3 km east of Paris, and on the other side by a vast foret, much larger than the existing wood, where the kings liked to hunt.
    Under Charles V, with the construction of the keep, the wall and the towers between 1361 and 1380, it became a real castle.
    The dungon is the most imposing part of the castle and is the talest building with a terrace that can accommodate catapult-type war machines. All its dimensions are impressive with the walls the thikness of which are 3m26.
    With its massive apparance, one cannot imagine that it was primarily a royal residence. However, the richnes of the decoration affirmed the power of the sovereign. The quality of the sculpted decoration reveals Charles V ' s passion for the arts as well as his deep piety.
    The 1200 m long enclosure with 9 towers, originally 40 to 42 m high, was surounded by a deep moat. The ditch was filled with water from the waste and rain water from the buildings in the enclosure.
