Brief reminder of Part 1 (without mistake )
This large rectangular fortress looks more like a vast walled city than a castle. The keep, designed to house the King of France, is a stronghold in itself. Large moats, a châtelet and two drawbridges ensure its defence.

    ---------------
If the Château de Vincennes has survived the centuries, it is because it has never been abandonned or forgotten. Even if the kings of France were content to stay there brievely for the plasures of hunting or for safety when the capital was in turmoil. They never cesed to regard it as a symbolic place of royal power. The construction of the Sainte-Chapelle, in Gothic style, began in 1379 and was not inaugurated until 1552 under Henry II.
In the 18th century, the architect Le Vau built the King ' s pavilion for the young Louis XIV and the Queen ' s pavilion in perfect symetry. However, their installation at the court of Versailles in 1682 marked the abandonment of Vincennes as a royal residence. From the Renaissance onwads, the château was used as a royal prison and in the 18th century housed famous prisonners such as Diderot, Mirabeau, the Marquis de Sade…,
Various factories (porcelain, earthenware, wepons ) will suceed one another within the building.

The Château de Vincennes was classified as a historical monument in 1913 and became the archives of the Historical Service of Defense.
