Although the hôtel de Matignon is knew as the residence and workplace of the Prime Minister, its history goes back to the 18th century. It is one of the jeewels among the private mansions of this period in Paris.
The construction was commissionned by Christian-Louis de Montmorency to the architect Jean Courtonne in 1719 on a plot of land of about 3 hectares. Located not far from the Palais de l ' Elysée, the construction of this private mansion date from the same period. It was completed in 1724, but the work was so expensive that it was sell to Jacques Matignon, Prince of Monaco. Afterward, it changed owners many times, including notables like Talleyrand. In 1932, the then President of the Council, Gaston Doumergue, wanted the state to buy it. In 1935, folowing the passing of a law, the hôtel de Matignon officially became the main residence of the head of gouvernment. This private mansion is different from the others in many ways. It has only one floor, which is quite rare for an 18th century building. In addition, the first room to be designed was the dinning room. It also has a huge terrace and a characteristic balustrade. The interior fittings have made it one of the most elegant and popular houses in Paris. Its decoration remains of exceptionel quality.
