    The French Revolution begin on 5th May 1789 in Versailles, with the convening of the Estates General and was based on the conciliation of the different order, namely the clergy, the nobility and the Third Estate, in an atempt to resolve the serious financial crisis in which the kingdom found itself.
    On 17th June 1789, the deputies of the Tiers-Etat (composed of people not belonging to the clergy and nobility ), lead by Mirabeau, proclamed themselves the ' National Assembly ' and decided to give France a constitution. This day correspond to the birth of the French representative system.
    Today, the National Assembly is renewable every five years. Its member are called deputies. There are 577 of them and they are elected by universal suffrage, ie. they are elected directely by the citizens. At the first sitting, the newly elected Assembly elects its President by secret balot from the rotrum of the Chamber.
