One may wonder about the unusual name that was associated with the Alma Bridge : ' Le Zouave ' .
Let ' s try to explein the origin of the name of the bridge as well as the statue that was fixed at the base of its central foot.
In fact, the Alma Bridge comemorates the batlle in the Crimea on 20 September 1854, which take place on the banks of the river ' Alma ' , near Sebastopol, where the Russian forces tried to slow down the advance of the allied armies (British - French - Turkish Ottomans & Piedmontese expeditionary corps ). During this battle the 3rd Zouave Regiment of the Imperial Guard distingished itself by successfully capturing the ennemy ' s cannons. This armed conflict ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on 30 March 1856 which confirmed the Russian defait.
Napoleon III, on the occasion of the first Universal Exhibition, orderes the construction of a bridge linking Avenue Montaigne on the right bank with the Champs de Mars on the left bank. He named it Alma in honour of deserving soldiers. He asked to add 4 statues that would be fixed on the 2 piles of the bridge symbolising the different victorious armes : an artilleryman, a foot chasseur, a grenadier and a zouave.
