At the end of the 18th century, La Villette, a small farming village near Paris, had about 1800 habitants with a few inn and guinguettes. A few Parisian bourgeois set up their country houses there.
After the Revolution, this hamlet became a commune, and in 1860 it became part of Paris. In order to suply Parisians with drinking water, the Ourcq canal and the La Villette basin were put into service in 1808. Navigation brought a great change to the small town, which became industriel. The number of boats was substantial (10000, boats in 1860 representing 1100000, tonnes of cargo ). The arrival of the railway renforced this urban transformation. The banks of the basin were covered with warehouses of general shops for soap factories, sugar refineries and food industries. In 1858, Baron Haussmann decided to replace the exiting slaughterhouse by combining it with a large catle market. Every morning, nearly 1500, oxen and 4000, sheep arrived.
Following the last two war, the slaughterhouse became dilapidated and seriously damaged, requiring reconstruction, which was decided in 1949. However, this operation proved to be excessivelie costly and lengthy. It was finaly interrupted in 1967 due to lack of funds, but the slaughterhouses did not cease to operate until 1974.
