Some/ any/ no: their compounds - English lesson
They are called QUANTIFIERS; they indicate unprecise quantities, or mention
people whose identity isn't important, or who are living in unprecise places...
Learners have some difficulties with them and I know it won't help if I tell you that
they're called "indefinite" pronouns in French...
I) SOME and its compounds: somebody/ someone/ something/ somewhere...
a) SOME is used in positive sentences.
- I'd like some coffee now, please.
b) SOME is used in polite questions when a positive answer is expected.
- Would you like some more tea?= have some more tea!
- Could I have some sugar with my tea, please?
c) SOME is not always translated. It applies to a small and unprecise quantity.
- She's got some good friends.
d) Les composés : somebody/ someone: applying to people
something: applying to things
somewhere: applying to places
everybody/ everyone [+ singular]
II) ANY/ and its compounds: anybody/ anyone/ anything/ anywhere...
a) In positive sentences, ANY may correspond to "any person or thing at all" ( or to "all").
- Paula may arrive at any moment.
b) ANY is used in questions or in negative sentences if "not" precedes it.
- Have you got any sports shoes in your car?
- Sorry, I haven't got any money...
c) Les composés : anybody/ anyone (people)
anything (objects)
anywhere (places)
- I'd give anything to get an answer to this question...
III) What about negative statements? Nobody/ no one// nothing/ nowhere/ or ...
not... anybody/ not anyone: nobody
not... anything/ nothing
not... anywhere/ nowhere
There you are! Not really difficult, is it? One more effort to do the test... It won't be difficult!
Go for it!
