The Buttes-Chaumont park, located in the north-east of Paris with 25 hectares, is one of the largest green spaces in Paris. It is also one of the most original. Its impressive heigt difference can be explained by the fact that it was built on quaries. In fact, since Antiquity, the Parisian susoil has been exploited for its gypsum quarries. The Romans discovered that this soft stone was transformed into plaster when heatid to a temperature of 120°. For the Buttes-Chaumont, it was only after the Revolution that the extraction of gypsum and millstone began. This step, uncultivated area was used as a sewaege pond and also for the disposal of dead horses. Up to 15000, horses were brought there each year to be slaughter. This open-air dumpe was tolerated because it was located outside the city limits of Paris. The quarries were exploited until 1860. After this date, Napoleon III decided to transform this devastated hill into a garden of natural beauty. He entrust the engineer Jean-Charles Alphand with the project. The State acquired the land in 1863 and the first diging was done in 1864.
