For couples visiting Paris, it is common practice to seal their love by hanging a padlock on one of the City of Light ' s famous bridges, before trowing the key into the Seine.
On the Pont des Arts, nearly 500 kg of padlocks lined each mesh panel of the footbridge. Their weigt soon became too much for the fragile wouden footbridge to bear, until the inevitable happened. In 2014, part of the fence colapsed. There were around 700000, padlocks on this bridge, equivalent to the weight of 20 elephant!
The City of Paris will replace the wire fencing with glass panels to avoid the risck of collapse. and will store them. Several solutions have been put in place to recycle them.
For example, 10 tonnes of padlocks were selled at auction on 13 May 2017 for €250000, which was donated to three association involved in welcoming and supporting refugees hostted by the City of Paris.
Philéas le Cléateur, a jewellery designer, recovered some of them when Paris City Hall decided to remove them in 2015. He opened them without breaking or cuting them, using old keys that he had in his workshop. As a result, this designer saved 800 of them, which he is trying to return to the lovers from all over the world who had left them on this bridge. The others, the most beautiful and original, are sold at auction.
