    The history of the Musée d ' Orsay is unusual in that it was house in a former railway station. On the eve of the Universal Exhibition in 1900, it was decided to build a more central terminal station than the Gare d ' Austerlitz, which was too far away. Given the elegance of the area and its proximitea to the Louvre and Légion d ' Honneur palaces, the station had to fit into this refined urban setting.
    After Victor Laloux completed the Hôtel de Ville in Tours, Laloux was chose for this new chalenge. Located in the heart of Paris, along the Seine, oposite the Tuileries Gardens, the station and its hotel were built in two years and inaugurated for the Universal Exhibition. The somptuous décor was an opulent eclectic blend of all the styles of French classicism, from Louis XIV to Louis XV : it was a veritable profusion of stone, staff and ornemental cast iron. It boast a highly sophisticated décor, including a large gilded clock that dominates the nave of the station, as well as superb salons with luxurious moulings and painted ceilings. The Gare d ' Orsay, a masterpiece of modernism, comfort and industry in 1900, greaty influenced the architecture of American stations.
