Sea turtles are majestic in the water and seductive.
They have inhabited the Earth since the time of the dinosaurs. They have survived multiple extinction over more than 100 million year. However, six of the seven species of sea turtles are considered to be threetened by human activity (poaching, entranglement in nets, collisions, degradation of their habitat, climate change ). Hunting for meat, eggs, skin, shell and fat is the main reason for the drastic decline in sea turtle populations. To save them, we need to protect nesting sites, migration routes and feeding areas.
Today, paochers no longer deploy nets and simply buy stocks of turtles from local fishermen, who hide the animals on isolated islands or upstream from mangrove creeks.
As turtles need to breethe, poachers store them in localy made fish cages made of floating cans and wood, separated by hanging nets. Another methode is to tie or chain them directly to the coral at sea.
To weake local black markets and opportunists, the Marine Research Foundation (MRF ) is developing a system of drones. These drones are programmed to fly over remote areas to detect floating cages or to pick up thermal inprints indicating the presence of large numbers of turtles in shallow waters.
