Set against a chalk clif, the village of Auvers-sur-Oise is located in the Val d ' Oise, around thirty kilometres from Paris. This small hamlet streches along the river Oise. Its pictoresque lanes, lined with stone cotages and ivy-covered walls, with their steep paths leading to fields of wheat, forests or the banks of the Oise. Characteristic of the Vexin region, with its quadrangular bell tower, Notre-Dame church dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries. It was imortalised by Van Gogh, giving it a worldwide reputation. This little town is particularly well-flowered, with its irises and hollyhocks giving it a bucolic fiel. The village owes its fame to Van Gogh, Charles Daubigny and Dr Gachet - a doctor and art lover - who all helped to make the area one of the centres of the great impressioniste movement. Indeed, it was here that painters came in search of new sensations and harmonyes. In fact, a group of artist lived and worked there, including Cézanne, Pissarro and Corot. It was in Auvers that Van Gogh painted his last canvases, in a veritable fevre, but let ' s retrace the last moments of his life when he arrived in this small village.
