While in the Maldives on Kaafu Atoll and after dinner, the hotel staff encouraged us to go out and head for the beach. A huge spotlight was point at the underwater part of the beach. Already a crowd had formed, and the reasons seemed ' strange ' to us. As we walked along the water ' s edge, we could see large dark masses flooting forward. The hotel staf, carrying buckets full of fish pieces, would throw them towards these docile marine animals, involving the tourists. In fact, it was a daily nigtly attraction to feed the manta rays, which would slowly move away as soon as the bukets were empty.
I invite you to followed me into this aquatic universe to discover these large cartilagineus fish. Their length can reach 4-5 meters for a weight of 1 to 3 tons. These flat-bodied fish have triangular pectoral fins on each side of their body. They move by simultaneously moving them up and down, giving a fantastic impression of underwater flight. There are two specie of manta rays : the oceanic or giant ray and the reef ray. The latter lives near the coast. With a life expectancy of about 50 years, these marine creature live in tropical and subtropical oceanic waters around the world. ' Manta ' means blanket or coat in Spanish and is a good representation of the body shape of these braod, flat animals that cut through the water with unparalleled grace.
