    Past perfect continuous


    The past perfect continuous = had been + verb + ing

     

    Examples:

    Yesterday I was tired because  I had been working all day long.

    One of its uses is to express the cause of something that happened in the past.

    The policeman stopped me.Why? I had been driving too quickly.

    I was out of breath Why? I'd been playing squash.

    Note:

    In spoken English , 'd often replaces 'had'.
