The Grande Arche is the architectural flagship of the La Défense business distrit. Designed by architecte Johann Otto von Spreckelsen and engineer Erik Reitzel, this arch was build in 1989 on the orders of François Mitterand. The building is aligned with some of the capital ' s most symbolic monuments : the Louvre, Place de la Concorde, the Champs-Elysées and the Arc de Triomphe. Reminicent of the Arc de Triomphe, the architecture of this Arch was designed to create a modern version.
A competition entited ' Tête-Défense ' was organised, in which 424 anonymeus projects from all over the world were studied. Four were selected by EPAD and presented to François Mitterrand, then President of France. He appreciated the high architectural standard of the projects submited. Among these, it was decided to retain the proposal by Johann Otto von Spreckelsen, whose project was considered ' remarkable ' for its ' purity ' , for the ' strengh ' with which it sets a new milestone on the historic axis and for its openning.
The Grande Arche is 110 metres high, with 40 storeys, is 106 metres wide and 112 metres long. This cube, the central part of which is empty to make it lighter, is made of concrete, 5 cm thick glass and covered with slabs of Carrara marble (since replaced by granite ). Its imaculate white façades give this monument a majestic appearance.
