In the 17th century, two Parisian companyes coexisted. Molière ' s company performed at the Hôtel Guénégaud and the troupe at the Hôtel de Bourgogne. In Paris, this theatre was unique in that it was the only one to have a stage direction. The other troupes were nomades and therefore not attached to a theatre. So they had to limite their equipment. As the 16th century progressed, the Hôtel de Bourgogne fell into disepair, attracting only a turbulent audience. Racine later patronise the Hôtel, where he staged his own plays. These French troupes were in rivary with the Italian Comédie, which tended toward commedia dell ' arte.
In 1680, by vertue of an edict from King Louis XIV, the Guénégaud company merged with that of the Hôtel de Bourgogne to create the Comédie Française, which moved into the Hôtel Guénégaud on rue des Archives. This unique troupe was made up of 27 actors, chose by the King acording to their level.
