    Vocabulary: belonging and possessing


     

    When we are to express possession in English, we immediately think about the 

    "genitive", also called "possessive case". test

    We won't deal with it in this lesson. 

    Here, we'll concentrate on the vocabulary which must be used to express possession.  

    Trying to find a little more, we must acknowledge that there are many such expressions. 

     

    We should, of course, remember 

    POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES and PRONOUNS (or determiners): 

    (possessive adjectives are placed before a noun; possessive pronouns replace a noun.)

      

    It's MY property: it's MINE. 

     My  Mine 
     Your  Yours 
     His His 
     Her Hers
     Its  its (own)
     Our  Ours 
     Their                                                  Theirs
      It's mine/ theirs                                              

     

     

    and also VERBS AT THE SERVICE OF POSSESSION, AND BELONGING: 

     To have 
     To own/ to possess sth 
     To be in possession of sth
     In my/ his possession 
     The owner/ ownership 
     To be possessive about sth                                                                                       

                                                    

     To belong to somebody 

     It belongs to me/ It's my property

     His belongings/ his things 
     His stuff/ his gear (singular)                                                                                          

     Have you got any?/ Do you have any?

     Have you got one?/ Do you have one? 

     

                    

     

     To obtain something from somebody/ To get something from somebody                       

     To take something from somebody 
     To take something away from somebody 
     To gain something 
     To acquire something

     To find something/ come across something/ to come by something 

     To keep something/ hang on to something/To hold on to something 

     To retain something
     a store 
     To have something in store

     

                          

             Will the baby birds be fed?                                                 Always difficult to SHARE... 

     

     To give somebody something/ to give something to somebody                                      
     To hand something over to somebody

     To provide somebody with something/ To provide something for somebody
