The verb "BE" in the present tense in interrogative form
The verb "BE" is an essential irregular verb in English. Its conjugation in the present tense is as follows:
- I am
- You are
- He/She/It is
- We are
- You are
- They are
To form a question with the verb "BE" in the present tense, simply reverse the order of the subject and the verb. Here are some examples:
Affirmative: You are a student.
Interrogative: Are you a student?
Affirmative: He is tall.
Interrogative: Is he tall?
Affirmative: They are happy.
Interrogative: Are they happy?
- Am I late?
- Is she a doctor?
- Are we lost?
- Are you ready?
- Is it raining?
We can also add interrogative words (who, what, where, when, why, how) to ask more specific questions:
- What is your name?
- Where are you from?
- Why are they sad?
- How old is she?
In general, short answers to questions with "BE" in the present tense are "yes" or "no", followed by the personal pronoun and the verb "BE" in the appropriate form:
- Are you a student?
- Yes, I am.
- No, I am not.
