Vocabulary: verbs + ing or the infinitive - English lesson

We have already reviewed some English verbs which are bothering our pupils and even our students. These verbs have several elements that can deceive even natives...

Today, we'll see three verbs which have a construction and therefore, a meaning which are different depending on what is following them.

Their meanings may be very close,  but they are also traitors, demanding different adverbs.

    Therefore, let us be careful...

    I) STOP : to cease from doing: to finish an activity.

    1) To STOP + ing : interrupting an action.

    - I stopped watching TV because I had homework to do.

To stop someone (from) doing something: to prevent from doing:

    - A good thing she was there: she stopped me from hitting him!

    2) To STOP TO DO something: to interrupt an action in order to start another one.

    - I stopped watching TV to do my homework.

II) To REMEMBER/ to REMIND: two different verbs involving memories.

    1) To remember:

    a)  remember + verb + ing : the action has taken place in the past.

    - I remember meeting them in London.

    b) verb + infinitive : the action is to be accomplished in the future.

    - Remember to pay your taxes before the 15th...

    2) To remind:

    a)  to Remind somebody of something/ of doing something

    - She reminded me of locking the doors before going.

    b) Remind somebody to do something: the action still belongs to the future.

    - Remind him to phone his mother when he arrives.

    Now, go for the test!
