Vocabulary: lose, waste: in many ways...

Teaching a language, is 'repeating' again and again, that the target language should never be compared to the students' mother language. Yet, one word or another we might be reminded that sometimes, it's necessary to refer to your own language and... observe!

Observe, for instance that the French verb " perdre " can be expressed with different  verbs in English; then, at that moment, you think  it's better to compare, ... and learn!

     To misplace
     To lose, lost, lost
     To squander/ to waste

To get tangled up/ get confused by
     To have time to spare
     To waste somebody's time
To lose sight of/ to lose touch with
     To lose weight/ to slim
     To waste time
     To lose ground
     To lose hope
     To be out of breath
     To lose your appetite
     To lose sleep
     To lose your balance

To lose your marbles/ to lose your mind/ to lose it

     To lose faith/ confidence in
To lose consciousness/ to pass out/
     To lose your composure
     To lose heart

    - We got lost/ lost our bearings in the mountains and were rescued hours later.

    - I got (To get, I got, got/ gotten) out of the habit of doing something.

    - To run until you're breathless/ out of breath.

    - I can't make head or tail of it! (I can't understand anything!).

    - I have nothing to lose!

    - We mustn't lose sight of the fact that he must be gone at 5.

    - She soaks everything up like a sponge!

    - He has his head screwed on right!

Those are a few expressions to remember, or at least, to be able to recognise!

    Go for the test!
