Talking about your weight - English lesson

Talking about your weight in English:
    Goal:
Learn how to say, ask, and understand weight in English, politely and correctly, depending on the country (UK or USA).

    1. Essential Vocabulary

weight=  how heavy something or someone is
to weigh = to measure how heavy you are
kilograms (kg) =  a unit of weight (metric system)
pounds (lbs) = a unit of weight (used in the USA)
stone = a unit of weight used in the UK (1 stone = 14 pounds)
scale=  the machine used to measure weight

    1 kilogram ≈ 2.2 pounds
    1 stone = 14 pounds ≈ 6.35 kg

📌 2. How to say your weight:
    Basic sentence:
    I weigh + [number] + [unit]

    - I weigh 60 kilograms.
    - I weigh 130 pounds.
    - I weigh 9 stone 4. (UK usage)

    Other ways to say it:
My weight is... → My weight is 75 kg.

    I'm... → I'm 140 pounds. (more informal)

📌 3. 🇬🇧 UK vs 🇺🇸 USA - How people say their weight:
    🇬🇧 In the United Kingdom:
People often use stones and pounds in everyday conversation.

    Example:

    I weigh 10 stone 5. → That's 145 pounds ≈ 66 kg

In hospitals, sports, and on official documents, kilograms are also used.

    You might hear:

She lost 2 stone! → She lost about 12.7 kg

    🇺🇸 In the United States:
People only use pounds to say their weight.

Stones are not used at all.

    Example:

    I weigh 150 pounds. → That's about 68 kg

Kilograms are used only in medical or scientific contexts.

    4. Conversion Table (Approximate)
Kilograms (kg) Pounds (lbs) Stones + Pounds
    45 kg 99 lbs 7 st 1 lb
    60 kg 132 lbs 9 st 6 lbs
    70 kg 154 lbs 11 st
    80 kg 176 lbs 12 st 8 lbs

    5. How to ask someone's weight (politely):
Talking about weight can be sensitive, so use polite forms.

    How much do you weigh?

    ✅ Polite forms:
Do you mind if I ask how much you weigh?

    Can I ask your weight?

What is your weight? (formal, written forms)

    6. How to answer or refuse politely:
I'd rather not say, if that's okay.

    That's a bit personal.
