    So many T H O U ...R...


    If you see them, or have to read them in a list, ...  they frighten you and put you off.

    Lost in a sentence, if you have to read them, you always (or almost) have to make a stop  

    to think a little, and then, you try... 

    'Ohhh! How do you want us to manage? That's impossible!', you say in despair.   

    They have to be known, to be 'tamed'... Which one of them is going to be the first one?

    Why not the shortest one, but not the most common one...

     

    1) T H O U : The (formal) pronoun used for "you" (or for God as the address of a prayer),

    when the person is singular and the subject of the sentence. It's mostly used in the Bible

    and by poets.  

    - 'Thou shalt not kill! ' 'Thou shall not steal!'

    - when thou art weary I'll find thee a bed... (Keats)


    2) T O U G H : strong and long-lasting, capable of strong endurance.  

    - Tough shoes/ a tough guy/ tough winter/


    3) T H O U G H : in spite of the fact that; although; notwithstanding,  A L T H O U G H, 

    AS  T H O U G H  (as if), E V E N   T H O U G H (even if).

    - Though he was strong, he couldn't lift the weight.

     

    4) T H O U G H T : a thought (the product of mental activity) and the preterite

    and past participle of the verb 'to THINK'. 

    - I've just had a thought: come with me to Dublin...

     

    5) T H R O U G H : past; beyond; from one side to the other... 

    - The kid was afraid of walking through the wood. 

     

    6) T H O R O U G H : complete; perfect; utter.

    - The candidate had studied the text thoroughly and was brilliant. 

     

    7) T H R O U G H O U T : from beginning to end of:

    - 'You can notice the repetition of the word throughout the text.' 

     

    8) ... what about pronunciation! "A HORROR for students! "
