     Lie, lay, lain  (intransitive) : être allongé, être couché


     the cat is lying by the fire                             it's nice to lie on the beach                                   the books lie on the table


     Lay, laid, laid (transitive) : mettre, poser


      he lays bricks, he is a bricklayer               he lays sheets of paper on the desk               he lays the box on the ground

     to lay the table: mettre la table               to lay eggs: pondre

    'to lay' est suivi d'un objet, pas 'to lie'.
