    Move and particles


    The verb 'to move' is widely used on its own but, when linked with other words, it can take on a wide variety of subtly different meanings, some of which are explored here.

    1. The company's Chief Executive had moved quite a bit during the course of his career.

    2. The policeman asked the busker to move as he was obstructing the underpass.

    3. I moved from my home town when I went to university.

    4. The retired couple finally moved to their home town but it wasn't the same.

    5. The guard asked everybody to move the carriage to make room for other passengers.

    6. Finally, as the battle seemed to be won, the whole army moved .

    7. When the police had surrounded the house they moved to arrest the suspects.

    8. The royal procession moved with great pomp.

    9. The travellers moved reluctantly after the protests of the townspeople.

    10. I had to move in bed when our first grandchild climbed in.

    11. I finally had to move when the third grandchild joined the first two.

    12. Winning the game at the weekend enabled the team to move three positions in the league.
