Mont Saint-Michel
legend or reality ?
Mont-Saint Michel before the legend is the story of the rock called Tombe, of the forest and of the sea.
It was a one hundred and fifty foot high rock. For thousands of years, it resisted erosion from wind and water. Around the rock, there was a thick forest. The forest was called Scissy. At the beginning of the 8th century (when bishop Aubert dedicated the rock to Saint-Michel), this forest disappeared: it was engulfed by the sea during an enormous tidal wave. And it is on this rock, lost in this immense bay, between sky and sea, that the men of the Middle Ages built Mont Saint Michel.
