    The teritor of Macao consists of a mountainous peninsula, with the mouth of the Xi jiang and islands of Coloane and Taipa, in the southern China Sea. Macao enjoys a subtropical type climate, like the whole of the area. The ton of Macao occupies the greatest part of the peninsula; in the North-East, its border with the prinvoce of Guangdong is mark by an impressive barrier set up by the Portuguese in 1870. The city is the shopping and administrative centre of the province and concentrates more than 80 p. 100 of the population of the territory. There exists on the islands, mainly rock, several villages and some small farm. A bridge connects the peninsula to Taipa, itself connected by a footbridge to Coloane.
