Hello everyone
I did an exercise on WHO, WHICH... Exercice 86 (who,whom and which)
and I don't understand the answers. Could you please help me?
3- Here's a photo of our children at the fancy dress party.'Which is Wendy?' Pourquoi Which ???
On parle d'enfants donc on devrait avoir WHO
6 'Is your brother at home?' Which one do you want to speak to?' brother= Humain
7 Which of you is Dr Smiths? I have a message for you. Dr Smiths= Humain
8 Which/ Who would you rather be - a doctor or a vet? Idem
Idem pour les questions 6,7,8

Dans ces phrases, which n'est pas un pronom relatif mais un pronom interrogatif employé lorsqu'il y a une idée de choix. On ne fait pas de distinction humain-non humain.
Which is Wendy? Laquelle est W. ? Est différent de « who is W.? »,qui est W. ?
Which one do you want to speak to? Auquel (à quel frère voulez-vous parler ? (La personne qui a posé la question ne savait pas qu’il y avait plusieurs frères)
Which of you is Dr. S.? Lequel de vous est le Dr S. ?
Si le mot suivant est « of » ou « one », la réponse est forcément « which, on ne dit pas who one, who of.

Which is Wendy? pour moi cela voulait dire : "qui est Wendy?" et Wendy est un humain donc WHO
Mais effectivement si l'on traduit: laquelle est Wendy, ça change tout.

"Which" implies "which one" and therefore when you make a choice, it can be used for people and objects.

I didn't respond to your 'Who is Wendy' before. You would use who when a person is unknown to you in this way.
Imagine that I say that I am going to the cinema with Wendy. You could respond, "Wendy? Who is Wendy?"
