Playing and Working with words/ 80
    Message de here4u posté le 10-09-2026 à 21:55:57 (S | E | F)
    Hello dear Friends!

Voici votre nouveau casse-tête favori !
Quelques jours de retard cette fois ! Désolée ! Icare doit piaffer d'impatience...
Réfléchissez-bien et construisez votre phrase sans hâte...

Tout le monde peut réfléchir et faire marcher ses neurones même si le monde est très " animé " autour de nous et si les préoccupations générales ne sont pas vraiment à " se poser et réfléchir "!
Je vous rappelle que cet exercice a des règles qui doivent être respectées. Lisez-les bien si vous ne les connaissez pas ! Ce travail est loin d'être un jeu... mais il peut être très ludique... Il vous laisse également toute liberté de choisir votre thème !

Using THE 8 WORDS given below (the 2 verbs can be put in whatever tenses or forms you fancy but MUST remain verbs!), 2 adjectives or adverbs, 2 nouns and 2 link words, + a given structure and the suitable punctuation, search your minds, think hard and create AN ONLY meaningful SENTENCE. " Easy", isn't it? (In fact, it's more easily said than done and advanced learners or natives can step in if they wish to!! )

    - You CANNOT change the nature of the words!
    - You CANNOT use two or more compulsory words consecutively!

PLEASE, WHEN YOU WRITE YOUR SENTENCE, PUT CAPITALS TO THE GIVEN WORDS! [and specify the number of words at the end.]

I'm sure you'll have inspiration...

    Here are the words :

    - To SAVE - To RIDE - a STROKE - a SOB - CROWDED - INTREPID - ALTHOUGH - THROUGH - et un des mots voisins du test suivant (test 2):
    Lien internet

Corrections récapitulées en fin de mois de septembre.
C'est parti pour une " très jolie phrase correcte et courte !" Go for it! Courage ! The FORCE is with You. ☀️ ☀️

    Hello!

"Check your saddle before going for a ride"

By a STROKE of luck, a man, who had fled the CROWDED cities, heard the SOBS of a lady, who had fallen because of a LOOSE saddle when RIDING her INTREPID horse THROUGH the forest, and could SAVE her ALTHOUGH she was hidden by bushes. (ca. 45 words)

    Hello!

Oups! 'the horse strength ' me gêne aussi... [ c'est la force du cheval ! Tu connais plusieurs structures pour exprimer ceci;;.]

    hello here
je peux proposer ceci à la place de saved horse strength :saved horse effort
que je traduis par qui économisa l'effort du cheval et non la force du cheval
    have a good day

    Hello Icare,

Comme toi, je préfère "effort" à "strength", mais il n'en demeure pas moins que tu utilises toujours la même construction : effort du cheval/ force du cheval... et qu'en anglais, tu dois ici utiliser une construction que tu connais parfaitement ... Allez...!!

    Hello all!

    My sentence:

    'A sad story'

It was hard to suppress SOBS as I heard how, ALTHOUGH he HAD RIDDEN his bicycle with such velocity THROUGH the CROWDED streets, the INTREPID doctor was QUITE unable to SAVE his beloved wife from her STROKE. 37 words

    Hello Happynutmeg!

    Let's read your sentence...

37 words

Très bonne phrase, mais je dois avouer que je n'aime pas trop 'to suppress sobs'... Je suis certaine que tu peux trouver mieux...

Hello Here4u and students: exercise 80

ALTHOUGH our car is free we decided THROUGH the city RIDING to arrive on the STROKE to the stadium which will be QUITE CROWDED; midway my INTREPID son said with a SOB that his legs hurt and didn't want to RIDE anymore...(43 words)

Hello Here4u and students: exercise 80

ALTHOUGH our car is/was (tense agreement) free we decided THROUGH the city RIDING to arrive on the STROKE to the stadium which will be QUITE CROWDED; midway my INTREPID son said with a SOB that his legs hurt and XX didn't want to RIDE anymore...(43 words)

Revoyons ce long segment de phrase :
we decided THROUGH the city RIDING to arrive on the STROKE to the stadium

Don't forget to give your sentence a title.

Ici, l'ordre des mots est tout à fait fantaisiste...

D'abord, le plus souvent: to decide to do something.
Puis l'ordre des mots est COD (we decided what?) puis, les différents compléments COI (il n'y en a pas ! ),puis les compléments circonstanciels (lieu puis temps -...)

Puis: ON THE STROKE... est une expression:
    at the stroke of [sth],
on the stroke of [sth] prep (at exactly: a given hour) (heure) tapant, sonnant adj,
il faudrait donc une précision temporelle derrière... Un petit ajustement sera nécessaire si tu perds 'stadium' comme antécédent. Ceci sera fait facilement...

Allez, courage, mad ! You can do it!

    Hello dears,

Voici vos phrases corrigées par vous-mêmes et récapitulées.

    - Check your saddle before going for a ride.

By a STROKE of luck, a man, who had fled the CROWDED cities, heard the SOBS of a lady who
    had fallen because of a LOOSE saddle when RIDING her INTREPID horse THROUGH the forest;
he could SAVE her ALTHOUGH she was hidden by bushes. (45 words)

    - At the Longchamp racecourse...

A wealthy racehorse owner was watching the racetrack from the CROWDED stands; ALTHOUGH
visibility was poor, as his horse was RIDDEN by an INTREPID jockey who made the horse
save its effort THROUGH the arrival, by a STROKE of luck, the horse finally won; after
receiving his PRIZE the owner let out a SOB... (47 words)

    - A sad story.

It was hard to contain my SOBS as I heard how, ALTHOUGH he HAD RIDDEN his bicycle with
such velocity THROUGH the CROWDED streets, the INTREPID doctor was QUITE unable to SAVE
his beloved wife from her STROKE. (38 words)

    - A Disrupted outing.

ALTHOUGH our car was free, to SAVE time, we decided to ride THROUGH the CROWDED city
and arrive at the STROKE of 5; midway, my INTREPID son said with a SOB that his legs
hurt and he didn't want to RIDE anymore. (43 words)

Un grand BRAVO à vous et merci d'avoir montré, par l'exemple,
qu'un même mot peut avoir plusieurs sens très différents.
